Tulum’s airport has been in the works for years and has even changed locations where it was planned to be
Construction has now begun in earnest and according to the builders on the site, things are at the 50% mark. It might not look like it from the pictures below, but there was a lot of prep work and just structural work that needed to be done first. Tulum’s airport (officially known as Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport) is due to open at the end of the year. The first commercial flights are planned for January 2024 and it is estimated that the airport will be fully occupied by May 2024.
The Tulum airport project was built by the Mexican Ministry of Defense and has a price tag of 3.2 billion pesos ($182 million).
Where will the airport of Tulum be located?
The Tulum airport will be south of Tulum near Muyil (Muyil is where there are ruins and also access to the Sian Ka’an reserve). The designated distance of the airport to downtown Tulum is about 34 km (21 miles) and about 40 km (24 miles) to the hotel area of Tulum.
This means that transportation times to Tulum’s downtown area will take about 25 minutes and 30-35 minutes to Cancun’s hotel area. This will greatly shorten the two-hour time from Cancun Airport to Tulum. Currently, the best way to get to Tulum is by flying into Cancun airport and taking a bus or private transfer to Tulum.
What will the airport terminal in Tulum look like?
The airport of Tulum was built on 1200 dunams of land (2965 dunams). Next to the airport, There will also be a military base. The terminal will have 13 gates for international and domestic flights. The structure will be built to withstand a category 5 hurricane. It will have the latest technologies for landing and navigation systems. The airport will be connected to highway 307 and also to the Maya train.
